I’m proud to say that this weblog isn’t the only one providing original analysis of India’s primary threat. Michael Spacek has a great new blog titled Naxal War as part of his PhD research at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Look forward to collaborating with him.

You missed the landmine blast in Chattisgarh two days ago by Naxalites which killed 12 cops all in all 16 people.
Also the killing of migrant labourers in Manipur.
Its food that someone else is also posting the news. But, please keep the good work up.
Pradeep –
Thanks, been busy working on my book. Between Spacek and I, we should have a lot of this covered.

I’m surprised that you list the Naxalites as India’s primary threat. My reading of India is that China is their primary threat and the Naxalites are a manageable nuisance. Do elaborate.
Chirol, I was paraphrasing something Manmohan Singh said a while ago, but Naxals are a deeply embedded black market driven insurgency that’s able to disconnect large swathes of the country at will and acts as a platform for both crime and a variety of other insurgencies (including radical Islam).
Contrast that to mild problems with China, and the fact that they have different global economy niches… I don’t see much of a faultline.
I don’t mean to suggest they aren’t a threat. But do you really think they are a threat on the same scale as China is?

Alok,
Direct force is a terrible way to approach a guerrilla insurgency. They thrive on it.

Ideologically, yes. Practically , no.
When a movement looses its direction in alleys of corruption and greed it needs to be chopped. It is cheating its adherents.
Also, my solution is not only direct force. It is force with rehabilitation.
If you measure the expanse of red corridor and the associated menace you will realize force is the only option.

Works well on paper. Not operationally.
The rehabilitation/buy outs/(managing what I call controlled chaos) are the only effective approaches. Money is the new gun.
